Packing Like a Pro: Box Hacks That Save Time and Prevent Damage
We’ve all been there: packing at the last minute, stuffing too much into a box, and hoping it all makes it in one piece. But there’s a better way.
At Direct Global Trading, we’ve seen what works - and what doesn’t. Whether you're packing for a move, storage, or shipping, these smart box hacks will save you time, protect your stuff, and make unpacking way less painful.
Let’s pack like a pro.
1. Use the Right Box for the Right Job
Not all boxes are created equal. Choose wisely:
- Small boxes for heavy items (books, tools, tins)
- Medium boxes for most items (kitchenware, toys, clothes)
- Large boxes for light, bulky items (pillows, bedding)
- Extra large boxes for maximum packing
Pro Tip: Overloaded boxes = damaged items and sore backs.
2. Use Proper Padding to Protect Fragile Items
When it comes to delicate items, the right protection can make all the difference.
We recommend using dedicated packing materials like:
These offer reliable cushioning and are designed to prevent breakage during transit.
In a pinch? You can also use soft household items like t-shirts, pillowcases, or towels for extra padding - but for maximum protection (especially for glassware and electronics), stick with purpose-made materials.
3. Label Like a Pro with Our Marker Pens
Clear labelling is key to a smooth move - and we make it easy.
All of our moving boxes come with a pre-printed room checklist on the side, so you can quickly tick off where each box belongs (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc.). No guesswork, no scribbling.
For best results, use our permanent marker pens - designed specifically for cardboard. They're:
- Quick-drying
- Smudge-resistant
- Easy to read at a glance
Use them to mark:
- Room name (tick the checklist!)
- Contents summary (e.g. "Pots & Pans")
- "Fragile" or "This Way Up" warnings
4. Pack by Category, Not Just by Room
Yes, grouping by room helps - but also group items by type:
- One box for electronics and cables
- One for cleaning supplies
- One for important documents
That way, you’re not opening 10 boxes just to find your phone charger.
5. Reinforce the Base of Every Box
Before packing anything, do this:
- Tape the bottom seam with at least two strips of strong packing tape
- Add a strip perpendicular for extra strength
- Flip over and press it down to secure
Pro Tip: For heavier items, add a cardboard base layer inside the box for even more support.
6. Pack Like a Suitcase
Keep the weight balanced by packing:
- Heavy items on the bottom
- Lighter, softer items on top
This prevents items from getting crushed and makes boxes easier to carry.
7. Fill Every Gap
Empty space = movement = breakage.
- Fill gaps with bubble wrap, packing paper, or even crumpled newspaper
- Make sure nothing shifts when you gently shake the box
Top off with paper or soft fabric to seal everything in
8. Seal the Top the Right Way
Don’t just fold the flaps over and hope for the best.
- Use 2-3 strips of tape across the seam
- Add a perpendicular strip for reinforcement
- Press the tape down firmly (especially on single-wall boxes)
If it’s going into storage or on a long journey, don’t skimp on tape.
9. Pack an Essentials Box
It’s the one box you’ll be glad you packed right:
- Chargers
- Toiletries
- A change of clothes
- Kettle + mugs + tea bags
- Snacks
- Important documents
Label it clearly and keep it with you, not in the moving van.
10. Don’t Overpack – Use More Boxes Instead
One overloaded box that breaks = more stress than five light, manageable ones.
